ACTIVate your kids!
Looking for some ideas on how to ACTIVate your kids this summer?
- Have them spend at least 30 minutes a day doing something active, whether it's an organized event (sports) or informal such as going for a family hike or walk.
- Minimize time on the computer and in front of the TV. Encourage your child to pick one show on TV, or access their computer or video games for just a couple of hours a day.
- Set a good example. If you don't 'walk/run/bike/hike/swim' your talk, they probably won't listen

- have your child create his/her own obstacle course using rope, cardboard boxes, safety cones, five gallon pails, stuffed animals, whatever you/he/she can find to set up. Your child can run around, hop over, crawl under, jump across, climb up, etc.
- chase butterflies, lightening bugs, birds on the beach
- play hopscotch, see how long you can hula hoop, rollerskate, jump rope
- do intervals (i.e. 30+ seconds at a time, or 50+ feet at a time) running up and down hills in the yard or hopping, skipping, running, jumping, cartwheels across a 25+ foot stretch of sidewalk, driveway or lawn
- create a gymnastics routine in your back yard
- do yoga (borrow a yoga video from the library if you don't have one)
- get a dog-walking 'job' or walk your own dog twice a day
- call your local gyms and ask what programs and equipment they have for kids. There are treadmills, elliptical's, bikes and other cardio equipment made for children. Also contact yoga studios for kids programs.

- mow the lawn (with a push mower)
